Why Wellington Jessie? It is a play on Wellington Wimpy from the old Popeye cartoons. When I was young I lived near the shores of Lake Huron in Michigan. In the village of Lexington near the bay, there is a little burger diner called Wimpys Place. It is also themed from Wimpy’s character in the cartoon and his veracious appetite for hamburgers. “I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today”. Although they do not accept IOUs for Tuesdays, it is a cute little place to grab a bite after a day out on the lake boating or swimming at the beach. It holds a special place in my heart because my dad would often take me to get hamburgers and sit down by the lake together. I always begged him to go to Wimpys, I liked the burgers but mostly I loved spending time with him. He called me “Wimpy” or “Wimp” and would even introduce me to strangers as “My daughter, Wimpy.” This, of course, was a conversation starter and he would immediately explain, “I call her that because she likes hamburgers, not because she is a wimp, she is actually very strong and resilient.” As an adult, I clearly do not go by Wimpy. I always thought if I established a pen name at some point in my life, it would be Jess Wellington.
This blog is mainly used for university blogs about marketing and research, however I do love creative writing and have a few pieces here, but I will likely get back to creative peices once my bachlors degree classes are completed 🙂
